St Augustine's Catholic College

Business

At our school, we offer GCSE Business (EdExcel) for KS4 and A-level Economics B (EdExcel) for KS5. We have chosen this subject combination to ensure our students have a strong understanding of the business world and to provide a natural progression from GCSE Business to A-level Economics B. Offering Economics B also gives our students a competitive edge for future opportunities, as it is considered more rigorous than Business and leads to higher earning potential for graduates.

Our school's GCSE Business and A-level Economics B courses are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the world of business and economics. We strive to make the content engaging, accessible, and relevant to our students' lives, and we continually adapt our teaching methods to ensure the best possible learning outcomes.

GCSE Business Studies

The EdExcel GCSE Business curriculum is designed to be engaging and relatable for our students. It is divided into two main sections:

Year 1: Investigating Small Businesses

Enterprise & Entrepreneurship

Spotting a Business Opportunity

Putting a Business Idea into Practice

Making the Business Effective

Understanding External Influences on Business

This year's focus is on start-up businesses, and the course follows a logical sequence that mirrors the development of a new business. Our annual Dragon's Den competition in Term 6 of Year 10 allows students to apply their knowledge and showcase their understanding of these topics.

Year 2: Building a Business

Growing the Business

Making Marketing Decisions

Making Operational Decisions

Making Financial Decisions

Making Human Resource Decisions

In Year 2, the course covers more traditional business functions and builds on the foundation established in the first year. We follow the sequence provided by the CGP Revision Guide, which allows students to easily track their progress and catch up on missed lessons.

Our teaching approach is designed to maximize student engagement and learning. We utilize tools such as "Kahoot lessons" to keep students interested and involved in the coursework. Students receive a Revision Guide, a Workpack of worksheets, a GCSE Whitebook for exam questions, and a color-coded exercise book.

The course is divided into 23 topic weeks for each year, and the content is stored in a spreadsheet for easy access and lesson planning. When the course is taught by multiple teachers, we work together to ensure a seamless and consistent learning experience for our students.
