We decided to re-design and transform an area of the college that was looking a little sorry for itself. Students were consulted and said that they wanted to retain a pond but make it more accessible for ‘pond dipping’ and also create a quiet space that could be used for meditation, prayer, teaching or simply relaxing and had to be planted so that it encouraged a variety of wildlife.
The area suffered from very poor drainage and so a significant amount of ground work had to be completed before construction, following students designs, could take place. We have started planting the pond and borders and this will continue over the next couple of years as funds become available. Little areas within the peace garden will also develop over time as we ‘house’ student projects. At the moment it is home to bamboo WW1 remembrance sticks from an RE lesson and we have plans for prayer banners from chaplaincy, decorated ceramics from Art and much more.
