A couple of weeks ago, on a wet November Wednesday, I had the pleasure of accompanying 6 of our year 13 A Level Religious Studies students by train to a day conference in Keynsham organised by Clifton Diocese. We joined about 60 other students from 6 local schools to hear about the role of women in religion from three different faith perspectives.
The conference was led enthusiastically by Gavin D’Costa who is the Professor of Catholic Theology at the University of Bristol and the three speakers – Dr Carmody Grey (Catholic representative), Dr Yafa Shanneik (Muslim representative) and Dr Lindsi Skinazi (Orthodox Jewish representative) – gave us interesting insights into their faith and life as women in a rapidly changing world. Plenty of food for thought and lots of questions raised! Perhaps more questions than answers!
Our students made a very favourable impression on the speakers and on Gavin D’Costa, pictured with Maddy Youngs, and he has offered to come and speak in college if we invite him – of course we will! Watch this space!
