“From up on Poppy Hill” is a beautifully illustrated Japanese animé released by Studio Ghibli in 2013. It follows the friendship and first loves of a group of Yokohama teenagers as they try to save their Clubhouse from the wrecking ball. Rated U, this film is suitable for Year 7 upwards. In Japanese with English subtitles. Run time 91 mins. ML1

“Zipi y Zape”, an adventure comedy, is Spain’s answer to the Goonies! Troublesome twins Zipi and Zape have to spend their summer in a strict re-education camp, but end up leading the resistance against the fun-hating headmaster. In Spanish with English subtitles. Run time 97 mins. ML2

“Gaza Surf Club” is an insightful and thought-provoking German-made documentary set in Gaza. Sick of occupation and political gridlock, these young people find personal freedom in the waves of the Mediterranean – they are the surfers of Gaza! Although classified as a 15, with parental consent, this film could be suitable for pupils in Year 9 and above. In Arabic with English subtitles. Run time 87 mins. ML3

“A Bout de Souffle”, or “Breathless” as it is known in English, is an iconic French film from 1960. Jean-Luc Godard’s crime drama is a New Wave masterpiece that changed the course of cinema history. Although rated PG, this film is more suitable for Year 10 upwards. In French with English subtitles. Run time 90 mins. ML4
