The Year 9 Carnegie group were delighted when their favourite choice Poet X won the Carnegie medal. The novel also won the national Shadowers Award. Poet X is a debut novel from Dominican-American author and slam poetry champion Elizabeth Acevedo. She was inspired to write the book by the realisation that there were few novels reflecting the lives of the students she was teaching.
Our students wrote “ “Xiomara, also known as X, is a 15-year-old girl that is an outsider in Harlem and is used to being noticed for her body by men and boys rather than her personality” who “writes poetry to get through conflict in her [strict Roman Catholic] family”.. “ Poet X is a coming of age story that is relatable to young adults across the globe”.
