The Y12 A level Chemistry students visited the Chemistry Department at the University of Bath for their Chemistry Enrichment Day. During the visit, the students experienced life as an undergraduate chemist by preparing their own samples of benzoic acid. Benzoic acid is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of products such as perfumes, dyes, topical medications and insect repellents. Students then analysed their samples using the Chemistry Department’s state-of-the-art equipment, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infra Red Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry. The students had a brilliant day and really improved their synthetic chemistry skills. Well done.
