On Wednesday 15th March the final of St Augustine’s Young Musician of the Year competition took place at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon. Once again the concert hall was pack with students who had taken part in the auditions, past students, parents, instrumental/vocal teachers, and members of our community who just wanted to be a part of the 26th final. We were delighted to welcome our four adjudicators for the evening, clarinettist Laura Potter from Cardiff and welcome back Jane Wavre who taught singing and directed choirs for 15 years at College, James Otto who is now a composer based in Bath writing music for visual media and arranging music for musicals and Catherine Chamberlin (nee Cavan) currently a freelance violinist performing with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera.
Last year’s winner Clover Kayne gave a truly beautiful performance of an aria from Handel’s ‘Theodora’ accompanied so sensitively by 2014 winner, Vincent Ling.
Massive Congratulations go to all ten finalists this year who all demonstrated professionalism, maturity and a real understanding of the music they performed. Oliver Barrett, Year 13 (Electric Guitar), Georgia Miller, Year 11 (Voice), Warwick Gatland, Year 11 (Piano), Anabella Fairgrieve, Year 10 (Voice), Niamh Massaccesi, Year 11 (Violin), George Tucker, Year 11 (Voice).
Chere Law, Year 12 (Violin) and Madeleine Longbotham, Year 9 (Flute) were Grand finalists.
George Tucker was awarded the Most Promising Performance Cup in memory of Becci Simmons, who’s 19th anniversary was on the 15th March. John Horsfall, Year 11 (Drum Kit) was runner up performing his own composition and this year’s Young Musician of the year is pianist Miles Kingsley in Year 12. Miles performed a most sensitive, yet exciting interpretation of Debussy’s ‘Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum’ from his Children’s Corner Suite No1.
