At 7.00pm on Thursday 25th June 1992 in the College hall the first ever St Augustine’s Young Musician of the Year Final took place. The 35 auditions that year were squeezed into lunchtimes and musicians from our local community came in to hear our students. Still to this day the competition relies on the good will, generously and enthusiasm of musicians from around the area. In fact, four out of the five auditions this year were adjudicated by past musicians from the College. There were 11 finalists in 1992 with vocalist Elizabeth Holtham named Young Musician of the Year. Two finalists that night Neil Lucas and Edward Hounsell now have children at the College. Until 2000 the final took place in the main hall and for a number of years we hired a grand piano for the occasion. In 2001 we moved the final to the Wiltshire Music Centre where it has been held ever since. Before 2013 the competition had quarter finals in one week with semi- finals the week after. On average approximately nearly 100 students enter the competition every year which means that around 2000 students have had the opportunity to take part in Young Musician since it started.
On Wednesday 16th March at the Wiltshire Music Centre 12 extremely talented young musicians from College will compete in the 25th St Augustine’s Young Musician of the year Final.
