Performing Arts comprises closely linked areas of Dance, Drama and Music. Through these three areas of study, students gain confidence in sharing ideas, in self-expression and personal evaluation.
At KS4, students can opt to participate in the BTEC Level 2 First Award in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) which combines subject disciplines taught separately at KS3.
Within Performing Arts students are given opportunities to develop responsibility for life-long learning, adding to their own subject specific knowledge and gaining new performance skills in a creative, challenging and supportive environment. Students learn through active practice, rehearsal, review, creation and performance of works in the arts. Students make connections across subject areas to devise their own work in response to stimuli and in working from a script. The course is designed to give equal focus to dance, acting and singing and the development of these performance disciplines.
The Musical Theatre qualification develops the students’ understanding of performing arts in its broadest sense. Students work through a range of assignment performance projects which cover the following key areas:
- individual performance skills
- musical theatre skills
- devising performance work
- performing scripted plays
- dance performance
The course suits a student who is committed and creative about the potential of combining the performing arts regardless of previous performance experience; is willing to take part in 2-3 performances projects each year; and is excited about reviewing professional work to support development of their own skills and their peers.
To support the range of performance projects, we have a dedicated Dance Studio, a well-resourced performance venue and music practise rooms.
