On our way…
On Friday 25 November, we left Trowbridge to spend a week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We were very excited at Heathrow airport and looking forward to working with students from Koleg Yayasan KYUEM. The purpose of our trip is to work with the Malaysian students to develop responsibility and leadership skills while getting to know more about the Malaysian culture.
Arrival in Malaysia
After a very long flight of 13 hours and not much sleep, we landed at Kuala Lumpur. The students from KYUEM were there to greet us and we quickly got to know each other on the hour long journey to the college. On arrival at the college, we were greeted by Dr Paul Rogers, Headmaster of KYUEM, and had supper together in the common room before retiring to our beds for some much needed sleep.
First day in Malaysia: Leadership conference
Today we spent the day with Mr Ford and Mrs Large recognising our own leadership potential and identifying some areas that we would like to develop this week. We worked closely with the KYUEM students and started to get to know each other.
In the evening we were honoured to be the VIP guests at the Bansawan competition. Bansawan is a traditional Malay play developed through various stages from the Indian-Persian theatre that was brought to Penang by visiting troupes from India during the final quarter of the 19th century. Here at KYUEM, Bansawan is an annual competition between the houses; Topaz, Diamond, Garnet and Sapphire. The stage settings were stunning, the acting was superb and the enthusiasm of the KYUEM students was contagious. We felt very honoured to be a part of such an important evening here at KYUEM.
Second day at KYUEM: Lessons in Malaysia
Our day started with a delicious breakfast of chicken and rice which was followed by a series of lessons to give us an idea of what it is like to be a student at KYUEM.
We were very fortunate to attend a lecture by Dr Paul Rogers on the history of the English language and its influence on politics. The lecture was fascinating and we even managed to read some Anglo Saxon! Following this, we then attended either a Chemistry, Marine Science, Maths, Physics or History lesson with the KYUEM students. In the afternoon were delighted to have a lesson in the Malay language with Miss Azura. We learned phrases such as, ‘Apa Khabar’ (How are you?) and ‘Khabar baik (I am fine) and are looking forward to practising our new skills over the next few days.
In the evening we attended the Christmas party which was hosted by the Christian Fellowship society. It was a fantastic evening of entertainment with a theme of ‘Love and Friendship’.
