Today was the first full day at KYUEM and we joined the Malaysian students for a leadership conference. We started by discussing leaders who have inspired us and the characteristics/traits of a good leader. We then looked at different leadership styles and reflected on our own personalities and what our preferred styles might be. We finished the conference by completing a group research project on an aspect of leadership we found interesting and presented our findings to Mr Watson and Mrs Large. The projects completed were as follows:
Ana, Marsha, Sura and Carissa looked at what communication is, how it can be developed and how it relates to leadership. They blind-folded us and guided us around the room – with lots distractions to see if we could communicate effectively.
Niamh, Anna, Amira and Ester decided to research the importance of problem-solving as they believe that ‘problems are solutions in waiting’. They made us exercise our neural networks by making us solve some abstract problems.
Jordan, Martha, Nicole & Vydhourie discussed ‘empowerment’ and Jordan did a great rap!
Lidiya, Izzati, Chloe and James looked at people we might consider to be influential leaders. We discussed how our views change as we develop and are exposed to different viewpoints and examples of behaviour.
Charlotte, Beth and Carmen made a movie to show both good and ineffective examples of the visionary style of leadership- Charlotte’s acting was excellent!
Luqman, Victoria, Daniel and Marissa spoke about the importance of having a vision. They made us question our own visions and what we want to achieve in life.
