The Carnegie Medal was won this year by the superb, captivating ‘Buffalo Soldier’ by Tanya Landman which is available from the library to year 9+ students. The book was inspired by the true story of a former woman slave Cathay Williams who at the end of the American Civil War joined the U. S Army. One review from the Group, said how they felt they could experience Charley’s feelings.
The Carnegie Medal Shadowing Group met for a special lesson to see the live screening of the medal announcement, with some refreshments, to celebrate intensive reading and high level discussion of the shortlist. The Group challenged themselves to read books they would not otherwise have read and were pleased when they discovered unexpected delights.
The Carnegie Medal has been awarded for over 70 years, with the overriding criteria of the book being of ‘outstanding literary merit’
